Measures for dyslexics
There are several measures for reading and for spelling that can be taken both at school and at home. These measures simplify reading and spelling and decrease the pressure to achieve.
General compensating/dispensating measures for reading
- Books of which the content matches the age and interests of the pupil, but which have been simplified on the technical level
- Audio recordings of children's books that are interesting for the pupil
- Usage of a DAISY player at school
- The pupil is allowed extra time for reading
- Reading assignments for subjects are simplified: less pages of text or a lower technical level
- Processing assignments on tape or (DAISY) CD
- Comprehensive reading tests on CD
General compensating/dispensating measures for spelling:
- Extra help at school for writing stories, reports and papers
- Rectification of a pupil's work by a classmate
- Ignoring of spelling mistakes under the condition that the pupil writes words the way they sound as much as possible when they don't know the correct spelling
- Differentiated marks for dictations (for instance, only mistakes that concern a certain spelling rule are counted)
- Simplifying of the writing task (less pages)
- Limiting the number of assignments (including the homework assignments)
- Extra time for writing tasks
- Usage of aids, such as dictionaries, charts with spelling rules and a word processor that includes a spelling checker
- Taking oral exams whenever possible
- Not making dictations of which it is clear the pupil will make many mistakes. If so desired, the pupil gets to make a dictation that matches their level
