Symptoms of dyscalculia
Many young children count on their fingers. Although this may be a solution for children with dyscalculia, as soon as the figures are too high to count on fingers, it is no longer of use.
They often show several or all of the following symptoms that can manifest themselves in various arithmetic problems.
- Problems with counting
- Problems with understanding the basics of arithmetic, such as fractions, the value of figures, the connection between figures
- Problems with insight: mental arithmetic and estimations
- Problems with orders: reading recipes, telling the time
- Problems with spacial orientation and three-dimensional insight: left-right orientation, problems with reading or memorizing series of figures, reading and interpreting maps, tables and dimensions, even problems with team sports on a large open field
- Problems interpreting codes, patterns (for example musical notes), stenography and languages
- Dislike for strategy games and toys
- Dislike for arithmetic
